Built in 1300 AD and containing about 10,000 dwellings, the city was of major importance under Chimu and later Inca rule. what remains now is a huge area of crumbling walls - it takes quite a bit of imagination to see how great it was before the Spaniards looted the place.

From Trujillo the complex is 5 km to the west, the entrance of the complex is in the Tschudi complex, which is another 1,5 km up a dirt road. Entry is about 4 dollar. The ticket admits you to the museum, de Huaca Esmeralda and the Huaca Arco Iris ruins and is valid for two days.
