Hawaiian Airlines, based in Honolulu, was founded in 1927 and now serves about 20 destinations in the Pacific region - domestic and international. There are daily, scheduled inter-island services to Lihue, Kauai; Kahului, Maui; Kona and Hilo, Hawaii, and daily code-share service to Molokai, Lanai, and West Maui with Island Air.  In the South Pacific region there are scheduled services to Sydney, Australia, Manila, Philippines, Papeete, Tahiti, and Pago Pago, American Samoa. Flights to Japan will take off in November 2011.

Hawaiian Airlines Check-in

Ninety minutes before scheduled take-off for inter-island flights, two-and-a-half hours before the flight for trans-Pacific flights and three hours before the flight is scheduled to take off for international flights. Check-in is available up to 24 hours before departure.

Hawaiian Airlines baggage allowance

Carry-on: Hawaiian Airlines allows each ticketed passenger one carry-on item with linear dimensions of no more than 114cm (or 45 inches - length + height + width) and weighing no more than 11.5kg (25lbs). Flyers may also bring a personal item such as a handbag, umbrella or camera.

Checked: on inter-island flights, in Coach Class, the first bag costs $10 to check-in. On trans-Pacific flights, the cost of checking-in a bag in Coach Class is $25, (second bag costs $35). On international flights, between Hawaii and Pago Pago or between Hawaii and Sydney, for example, the first and second checked bags go free.

Excess: for travel between the islands, if a piece of luggage exceeds 22kg (50lbs) but is less than 32kg (70lbs) the cost is $25 per piece. For flights in the US or between the US mainland and Hawaii, the charge is $50 per piece. If a piece of luggage is oversize - between 157 and 203cm (62 and 80in) - and is not heavier than 32kg (70lbs) the cost is $25 for inter-island flights or $100 for flights within the US or between mainland US and Hawaii. These charges will be in addition to charges for excess pieces and/or overweight luggage.

Hawaiian Airlines legroom

The amount of legroom depends on the aircraft. In the Airbus 330, the seat pitch in Economy is 79-81cm (31-32in). On the 767 it's about 81cm (32in) and on the 717 it's 76-79cm (30-31in).

Pre-arranged seating

Seats can be reserved during the booking process. They can also be selected during online check-in.

Passenger change details

Depending on the type of ticket you have purchased, making changes to your reservations may result in a service charge.

Child fares

Lap infants fly free, but children over the age of two are considered adults as far as fares go. There's no discount on domestic flights although there is one on international flights.

Pets

Cats, dogs and household birds will be transported from the mainland US to Kahului, Maui under certain conditions. The fee is $225. Pets are not accepted as baggage on flights to or from Australia or the Philippines.

Carrying musical instruments

Accepted as checked luggage, also accepted as cabin baggage.

In-flight service

Complimentary meals and a decent entertainment offering (the latest Hollywood blockbusters) with friendly flight attendants make flying with Hawaiian Airlines a pleasant experience.
