Emirates Airline, headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is owned entirely by the government of Dubai. It's one of the fastest-growing carriers with a young fleet (that includes the A380 superjumbo) that serves more than 100 destinations worldwide. Emirates Check-in

Online check-in opens 24 hours before the scheduled flight departure and closes 90 minutes before.

Check-in desks at the airport close 90 minutes before departure for those checking baggage into the hold or 60 minutes before departure for passengers with carry-on bags only.

Emirates baggage allowance

Hand luggage: one bag is permitted, not exceeding 7kg weight or dimensions of 55 x 38 x 20cm.

Checked: Varies by route and class of travel. Emirates has a great baggage calculator. Economy-Class passengers on the London-Dubai route may check-in 30kg of luggage. Business-Class travellers have an allowance of 40kg and First-Class passengesr may check 50kg of luggage.

Excess: Additional luggage allowance may be purchased online at a 20 per cent discount. Extra baggage allowance is pricey - £100 for 5kg, £200 for 10kg, £300 for 15kg, £400 for 20kg, £500 for 25kg. If you leave it until you get to the airport, excess baggage rates are £25 per kg.

Pre-arranged seating

Several groups of passengers may select their seats online - First Class and Business Class travellers, Skywards members, passengers who booked online and passengers travelling with small children and infants. Seats may be reserved via Manage a Booking once you have the Emirates booking reference.

Passenger change details

The booking management tool allows passengers to view, print or email their itinerary, select seats and special meals, change booking, upgrade, add hotel and rental car bookings, purchase excess baggage allowance and apply for a UAE visa. Depending on the fare class, there may be an administrative fee plus any difference in fares.

Child fares

Lap infants fly at a greatly discounted rate - about 15 per cent of the adult fare. Child fares are discounted by about 20 per cent. The minimum age for unaccompanied children is five.

Senior fares

Emirates doesn't offer discounts for older travellers.

Pets

All animals must go as cargo to and via the Republic of Ireland and United Kingdom, Australia, Cyprus, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Jamaica, New Zealand, Seychelles, South Africa and the Sultanate of Oman. Animals are not allowed on flights to and from any cities in India apart from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. Contact the local Emirates Office (44 844 800 2777) in advance to arrange transport.

Carrying musical instruments

Musical instruments can be carried on Emirates flights in three different ways: in the hold as checked baggage; as cabin baggage; on extra seats in the cabin. All must be booked in advance.

In-flight service

Complimentary hot meals and drinks are available on all flights. Emirates' in-flight entertainment system is called ice (information, communications and entertainment). There is BBC news, phone, SMS and email and more than 600 channels of movies, television, audio and games.

Air miles

The frequent-flyer programme is called Skywards.
